Multiple Sclerosis

The Multiple Sclerosis Service is provided by a specialist practitioner who specialises in the care of people affected by Multiple Sclerosis.

The MS Specialist Practitioner (who can be a nurse or a therapist) has specialist knowledge of Multiple Sclerosis, the treatment and management of the symptoms, as well as a good understanding of other services available in the local area, including contacts with social services and the voluntary sector. They also have access to members of the multidisciplinary neuro team including consultant neurologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, speech and language therapists, continence advisors and psychologists.

The Multiple Sclerosis Service aims to provide continuity of care by offering assessment, information, ongoing support and management of medication. We:

  • Offer assessment, information and ongoing support to people affected by Multiple Sclerosis including their carers and family
  • Provide support and assistance to those on disease modifying therapies (DMTs)
  • Be a continuing point of contact by offering a telephone/email help and advice line, clinic appointments at various settings, as well as home visits for those who are unable to get into the clinic
  • Are a reliable source of information for other clinicians within Surrey Downs Health and Care.

With your appointment letter, you will be sent a questionnaire for you to consider what you would like to discuss at your appointment, along with a reminder to bring your medication.

For your appointment, which will be between 30 minutes and an hour, you are welcome to bring a friend or family member with you for support. Remember: this is your appointment to meet your needs.

Once you have met the MS Specialist Practitioner, follow-up plans will be made with you to best meet your current needs.

The Multiple Sclerosis Specialist Practitioner is available by phone or email to contact in between visits if there is anything that you wish to discuss or are concerned about.
